My lab focuses on identifying cognitive and affective processes that confer risk for depression. Our work uses neuroimaging, autonomic psychophysiology, and experimental, behavioral, and intensive longitudinal methods. A primary focus is on tracking dynamic regulation processes over time in ecologically valid “real-world” contexts, using tools such as wearable ambulatory autonomic psychophysiology and ecological momentary assessment. A second focus is on identifying the neural circuitry supporting successful affect regulation in everyday life. A third focus is on experimentally modulating potential mechanisms of successful affect regulation (e.g., using heart rate variability biofeedback). By improving our understanding of how regulation varies between individuals, as well as within people over time, our research has implications for developing person-centered metrics for detecting periods of risk, and for intervening to improve affect regulation and reduce risk for depression.
