Description: Pittsburgh Action Against Rape (PAAR) was the first victim service agency in Allegheny County, and one of the first rape crisis centers in the nation. The agency was incorporated as a non-profit entity in 1972 and has been providing essential no-cost services to victims of sexual violence in Allegheny County for 50 years. As of today, PAAR is the only agency in Allegheny County solely devoted to the issue of sexual violence. PAAR provides comprehensive services to victims of sexual violence and to their families, serving children and adults of all gender identities, ages, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Duties of Intern: Interns will provide crisis support to survivors and their families via the Helpline which is available 24 hours a day. PAAR interns are a team of diverse and dedicated volunteers who provide crucial crisis services to survivors and their families, receive training and certification as a Sexual Assault Counselor and gain experience that can guide them in their career or professional pursuits.

Requirements:

  • Must be a junior or senior at the University of Pittsburgh.
  • Must complete all mandated clearances (a Pennsylvania State Police criminal history record check, a Pennsylvania child abuse history clearance, and an FBI criminal background check, mandated reporter training)
  • Complete the Online Remote Training (25 hours), attend a virtual agency orientation and attend four half-days of live, virtual training with PAAR
  • Work appx 100 hours per term to earn 2 credits. Ability to continue for a subsequent term to earn an additional 2 credits. (this is not available for 3 credits in one term).

General Information: Opportunities are remote and flexible. Shifts are available 24 hours a day. Student interns will cover shifts when the PAAR office is closed which is on weekday evenings (between 5pm - 1am) or on the weekends (between 5pm on Friday through 9am on Monday).
