Supervised Field Placement

Supervised Field Placement (PSY 1900) is a psychology internship in which three credits can be applied as a 1000-level psychology course.

Psychology majors in this course earn credit for volunteer work in a supervised setting which has been approved by the Department of Psychology. The purpose of this course is to provide practical experience related to other coursework in the department and to help students decide which career path is best. Consult the PSY 1900 Guidelines for additional information.

The Psychology Advising Office has an approved list of sites for PSY 1900. Students who would like to get experience at a site that has not been approved by the psychology department must register through the Office of Experiential Learning as CAS 1900 and will not be able to use the experience for the upper-level psychology major requirement.

Prerequisites

Students must complete the following prerequisites before the start of a supervised field placement:

  • Overall GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • 12 credits in psychology (including current term)
  • Any additional requirements of the site

Credit Options

Students may take a maximum of three credits of PSY 1900 in one term (excluding the Allegheny County Coroner's Office for six credits) and a maximum of six credits at one site upon the discretion of the site supervisor and the Psychology Advising Office.

Students can fulfill one of the three required 1000-level psychology courses with a three- credit PSY 1900 experience. Any additional credits earned for PSY 1900 will count as elective credits. Credits are determined by the number of hours spent at the site over the term:

  • 1 credit = 55 hours
  • 2 credits = 85 hours
  • 3 credits = 120 hours
