University of Pittsburgh

Facilities & Resources

The Department of Psychology has modern laboratory facilities in several buildings on Pitt’s campus, all within walking distance of each other. In 2002 the psychology department moved into a new building, Sennott Square, consolidating laboratories and offices into a centrally located, state-of-the-art facility.

The Learning Research and Development Center (LRDC), one of our research partners, has extensive research facilities for many departmental faculty and students whose work is affiliated with the LRDC.

Visit graduate programs for more details about specific laboratories within the department.

Extensive Library Holdings

The Langley Psychology Library houses nearly all journals relevant to psychology and approximately 25,000 psychological monographs. Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic’s (WPIC) library is the largest psychiatric library in the world, and the Falk Library of the Health Sciences in Scaife Hall contains extensive holdings of interest to psychologists. The University's library system has one of the larger academic collections in the country, totaling nearly 5 million volumes (including microfilms).

Computing

Computing Services and Systems Development (CSSD) provides support for instruction and research and delivers services that meet the University's computer, information processing, and telecommunications needs.

Any University of Pittsburgh student can access Pitt's central computers for course or study needs. New network ports provide high-speed connections—300 times faster than a 28.8 Kbps modem—as well as access to newer Internet technology such as real-time video conferencing. A joint effort of Carnegie Mellon, the University of Pittsburgh, and Westinghouse Electric Corporation, the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) houses a CRAY C-90 and the T3E, the two fastest processors in the world.

The Learning Research and Development Center   also offers education outreach opportunities in supercomputing to undergraduates and local high school students. Graduate students have access to the computer's technology for research on topics ranging from computer-generated drug design to storm forecasting.

Research performed in the Behavioral Immunology Laboratory focuses on the impact of psychological and social factors on the functioning of the immune system and on susceptibility to immune-related diseases.
