DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS

RESEARCH

  • In 2002, ISI ranked universities on relative impact of papers published between 1997-2001 in 18 “fields”. The University of Pittsburgh was tied for first place (with Duke and Harvard) in the “field” of psychology/psychiatry. (Relative impact = citations/paper compared to a “world baseline figure” representing the impact for the field during the same period.)

  • In the same study, Pitt was ranked fourth in total number of papers (behind Harvard, Yale and Columbia).

  • In a separate analysis, universities were ranked in terms of papers published in psychology journals between 1998-2002.  Pitt ranked 9th in total citations and 13th in impact (citations/paper).

  • Pitt is 24th among institutions nationally in total federally financed R&D expenditures in psychology.
